A French Drain is quite simply a perforated drain pipe installed 12"-18" below surface, surrounded in aggragate (Rock) and a filter fabric, designed to drain sub-surface water from the ground and direct it elsewhere.
The difference between a Surface Drain and a French Drain is that a French Drain moves sub-surface water from poor draining areas, and Surface Drains are designed to collect and move water which comes from above the ground - such as gutter downspouts, poorly designed/graded/pitched land, and/or rain run-off.
A dry-well is an underground drainage solution when it is impractical, or not allowed to terminate your drains to open daylight. Example: if you are bordering conservation, wetlands, or concerned with run off onto neighbors property.
Typically we will dig a calcuated size hole approximately 4-5' deep, fill the base with drainage gravel, then the dry well unit, and back fill with more drainage gravel topped with soil. Solution design can vary with needs.
