Shed Pads and Above Ground Pool Sites

Actual Customer Testimonial

Types of shed pads

Compacted Stone

$

This is is our most common shed pad style. We excavate all compost and loam base down a few inches, then install a laser-leveled compacted crushed concrete base over commercial landscape fabric topped with your choice of 3/4 Bluestone or Natural (tan). A pressure treated 4"x6" timber border is installed with galvanized brackets, staked rebar, and Timberlok structural fasteners.

Concrete Slab

$$$

We excavate down approximately 6-8", and install a laser leveled compacted crushed concrete base. A fiber reinforced 6" concrete slab is then formed, poured, and finished. We offer optional channel drains as well for structures with a canopy, or adjacent to sloped areas with run-off.  (Such as a pool deck)

Concrete Sonotube

$$

Usually installed (9) or (12) at a time based upon Shed or structure plans, we auger 8", 10", or 12" tube holes up to 48" deep. All tubes are laser aligned and leveled, then filled with 4300 psi concrete and optional galvanized strapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at nick@nickspropertyservice.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Each town may be different, but typically in Massachusetts, any shed 200 sq feet or less (10x20) does not require a permit.

Again, the answer may vary with each town, but below are the general guidelines for Massachusetts concrete slabs:

  • 200 Sq Ft or less: Simple 6" Slab on Grade. No thickened edges or frost walls required.
  • 201-599 Sq Ft: Thickened eges (12"-24") recommended with rebar/mesh reinfored slab.
  • 600 Sq Ft +: Full 4' Frost Wall foundation, like building a home or addition.

A "Monolithic Slab" or "Monolithic Pour" simply means the thickened edge concrete footing walls are poured at the same time as the interior slab, in one pour.

  • A "footing" simply refers to any type of thickening within a slab. It could be in the middle of a slab for future support columns, or a long the outer edge.
  • A "thickened edge" or a "Haunch" refers to pouring a slab where the edge of the slab is dug down deeper than the rest of the slab, and may generally be anywhere from 12-24" wide, and 12-24" deep - forming a reinforced edge of concrete. These types of pours typically also require rebar and/or mesh reinforcement.
  • A "Frost wall" is a thickened edge, which typically extends 48" below grade to anchor the slab below the frost line. Many times "Frost Wall" pours are not monolithic pours, and the wall is formed on both sides, poured, then the interior slab is poured. This a full foundation like you would use for a residential home or addition.

Types of Concrete Slabs

6" Slab on Grade

$

This is is our most common concrete slab. 6" thickness across entire slab.

Monolithic Pour - thickened edge

$$

4-6" Center Slab thickness, 12-24" Edge "Haunch" thickness. Rebar reinforced. Spec's typically specified by engineer or structure builder.

Full Frost Wall

$$$

48" deep Frost walls usually poured separately from interior slab and formed on both sides of wall. A "full slab foundation" like found in homes and additions. Engineering required.

shed pads and above ground swimming pool leveling prep

Having a Shed or Above Ground Pool installed?

Many times the "perfect spot" where you want to put your above ground swimming pool or shed isn't perfectly level and needs to be properly graded for use.

Many times we can affordably work with your existing grade to bring your project area to  level without the expense of additional leveling fill material. We use laser grading to make sure your site is perfectly level (within 1/2") for your Pool or Shed.

Shed Pads and Pool Pads are very similar in construction, with the exception of the "top-coat."

The top-coat of most shed pads will be about 3" of 3/4" clean bluestone as specified by most Shed manufacturers to comply with their drainage warranty. This 3/4" bluestone will provide good drainage qualities.

The top-coat material on swimming pools is about 1" of fine sand. This is an area many homeowners and contractors make a mistake and attempt to use several inches of sand to level a site. We will never correct grade with sand - it is a very "unstable" product which can wash away and also attract burrowing insects and critters. Grade is corrected with a compacted fill material to bring the site to laser level within 3/4"-1", then we use find sand for the last 1/2"-1" of final grade.

On shed pads we will also lay down commercial quality landscape fabric under the top coat(s) of material to prevent the material from sinking into the substrate (dirt) below. This is also an often overlooked steps which can lead to rapid deterioration of the finished product as the top-coat material sinks into the dirt substrate below.

All shed pads and pool sites are compacted with a power compactor to provide a solid surface with minimal settling which will provide many years of good use.

Edging is optional, but highly recommended for material retention on shed pads. Typically we will use pressure treated 4"x6" timbers, drilled and staked  with 12" rebar, and screwed galvanized corner brackets and joining plates.
