There is no single "perfect" material for every driveway, parking area, or top coat. Every project is different, and that is what separates the "Pro's" from the "Joe's."
The right choice depends on the clients desired appearance, use, and soil conditions.
Below you will find the 4 most popular choices of "Top Coats" out there, with pro's and con's of each. Feel free to reach out any time to talk about the best choice for your project or to get a free estimate.
"Dense Grade" is a mixture of 3/4" - 1" Gravel with "Fines" or Stone Dust mixed in. This mixture of larger gravel with smaller dust type particles packs very tightly and provides a very solid surface.
"Washed" stone provides a very clean look and provides a good surface, with good drainage, and nice curb appeal. The lack of "fines" or dust means the material doesn't "lock together" as well as some of the other choices, but its still very solid.
Asphalt Millings are recycled asphalt that is ground up from resurfaced roads. This material can be hit or miss as far as quality goes - the key is it must be ground and screened to 3/4" - 1" or less. Many times, loads can be left with large 3-4" chunks which can be undesirable and not pack well.
Typically Asphalt Millings are a very good

Typically Asphalt Millings are a very good choice for a well-packing, well wearing, solid surface choice. It is less expensive than other choices, but has a little less "curb appeal" as it is a very dark surface with a little more "Commercial" feel.
Reprocessed Concrete is less expensive than other choices, and packs EXTREMELY well and very solid. It is a great choice as a base for a Shed or Hot Tub, and we even use it as a substrate (under the top coat) on driveways and parking areas. Drawback is it is a very "brown" material, with minimal curb appeal and an "industrial" feel.
