Once you find a Steel Building that you like, our suggestion is to take the plans from the steel building manufacturer you are considering and bring them to your town building department, so you know what type of slab they will require for your structure.
There are several types of slabs which can be poured for a steel building - and your building department will require one of the following types of slabs:
a. 6" slab with 18" thickened haunch (edge) (monopour)
b. 6" slab with 18" thickened haunch and insulation (frost protected shallow foundation) (monopour)
c. Full 4' frost wall foundation and slab
These are listed these in price order, from lowest to highest. The thickened haunch with notch edge is usually always required if not just by the town, but by the steel building company as they need the thickened edge to bolt their building to.
The slab is poured 3 1/2" wider on all sides for a "Drop Notch Edge" so that the building sits slightly inside the slab, and the wall sheathing hangs down below the slab into the "notch" to prevent water intrusion.
Optional Insulation is foam board insulation installed under, and surrounding the slab to help frost protect the slab, and is often done when the building is heated.
